Tommy Sands was born, reared and still lives by the foothills of the Mourne Mountains in the North of Ireland. As a child he heard the lively fiddle and accordion, and the traditional songs and stories of his mother and father welcoming neighbours into the small farmhouse kitchen. Later with his brothers and sister, The Sands Family, he would travel the world bringing these same songs and stories to stages as far apart as Moscow's Olympic Stadium and New York's Carnegie Hall.
In addition to all this, Tommy Sands fan clubs have been springin up all over the country. His national fan club has its address at P.O. Box 349, North Hollywood, California. Much of the fan mail is from teenagers, but a fair portion ... comes from adults-both men and women. Tommy has asked his clubs to do more than merely plug him and his record. "Make something out of these get-togethers," he advises.
From All Movie Guide: Formerly lauded (by his press agents) as the next Elvis Presley, Tommy Sands started out as a juvenile actor on television. As a youth, he recorded a few hit rock & roll singles; he made his feature-film acting debut as the same in Sing, Boy, Sing (1958). His film career lasted in a similar vein through the late '60s until a liver disease coupled with mental breakdowns forced him to leave acting. He did... make a few guest appearances on the television crime drama Hawaii Five-O. Sands was formerly married to singer/actress Nancy Sinatra. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
On the first of January, 1957, Tommy Sands flew from Hollywood to New York to audition for the leading role in "The Singin' Idol," the dramatization of the life of a popular rock 'n' roll singer. The part had first been offered to Elvis Presley. But Presley and his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, saw no way in which Presley could accept because of other commitments. Both pitched for Tommy Sands-thier friend from "Louisiana Hayride" days in Shreveport-for the role. And ... Presley fulfilled a promise he'd made months before to help Tommy.
The multi-talented Tommy Sands was born August 27, 1937, in Chicago, IL, to show-business parents. His entry into the business was no mistake, surprise, or happenstance, but genetic and inevitable. His father played piano and his mother sang. He took guitar lessons when he was eight years old and became an adequate axeman. By this time the Sands had moved to Houston, TX, where Sands got the acting bug. He moved to Los Angeles after high school and landed a job on Cliffie Stone's country & western television show.

The object of most replacements of older stars is to bring in someone younger looking to extend their career, like the Kenny Rogers impersonator.
