Robredo started the season well, reaching the final of a tournament played on hardcourts for the first time in his career at Auckland; his previous appearances in finals had been solely in claycourt tournaments. He ... reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time, where he lost in straight sets to world number one Roger Federer. Although no one at the Australian Open managed to win a set off of Federer, Robredo and the eventual finalist Fernando Gonzalez tied for the most number of games won against the world number one during the tournament.

Nikolay Davydenko reached his seventh final of the season at the Paris Masters on Saturday, beating Tommy Robredo 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Davydenko will meet 17th-seeded Dominik Hrbaty on Sunday. Hrbaty advanced because 10th-seeded Tommy Haas retired because of gastroenteritis while trailing 6-4, 1-0.

Robredo begon met tennissen op zijn 5e levensjaar. Als junior won hij in 1998 de Junior Orange Bowl en haalde in 2000 de finale van Roland Garros voor junioren. Die finale verloor hij van Paul-Henri Mathieu. Hij speelde zijn eerste grandslam in 2001.

Robredo fought back to beat 14th-seeded Russian Igor Andreev 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), while a sixth-seeded Calleri handled his countryman Diego Hartfield 7-5, 6-2 on the red clay at Casino Stadion. Calleri beat Juan Ignacio Chela in last year's all-Argentine finale here.
