Tom Wilkinson: Royal Academy

British character actor Tom Wilkinson was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire. He moved with his family to Canada for several years when he was young but later returned to the UK, where he graduated from the University of Kent. Wilkinson landed his first professional job as an actor working in Camden one day after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Earlier, Tom had considered a career in physical education, but at university had tried a little acting and the bug bit. The boy won entry to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and, on leaving, dedicated himself wholly to a life as a wandering player. He took the "wandering" part very seriously, for the first ten years ensuring that all his property could fit in a single suitcase - anything that didn't fit "had to go".

In this latest film... a spot-on American accent and fine acting see Wilkinson transformed into a huge screen presence. Already industry mutterings are suggesting he'll be a strong Academy award contender come March next year. The film, the story of a couple coping with the death of their son, is terrific - thanks mainly to the painfully realistic portrait of the marriage between his and Spacek's characters.
