Muscular young actor Tom Welling is a former construction worker and soccer player who admits his indifference to comic books. After a few modeling jobs, he guest starred opposite Amy Brenneman on a few episodes of the CBS drama Judging Amy. In 2001 he was cast as the teenaged Clark Kent on the WB series Smallville. As the awkward young superhero with many opportunities to bear his chiseled chest, Welling won a Teen Choice award and was consequently branded a breakthrough star. He made his film debut in the 2003 remake Cheaper by the Dozen, along with fellow teen star Hilary Duff. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Until he was cast as the Boy of Steel in The WB's Superman prequel series, "Smallville," Tom Welling had a very short acting resume. He appeared in a few high school plays then went into construction work after graduation. Discovered on vacation by a modeling scout, Welling modeled for several years before pursuing acting. After a handful of television commercials for the likes of 7 UP, Verizon and TJ Maxx, Welling appeared in a music video for young singer/songwriter Angela Via before being cast in a recurring role as a karate teacher/love interest with Amy Brenneman in the TV series "Judging Amy." Never a Superman fan as a kid, Welling was reticent to take the part of the young Clark Kent in "Smallville." He reportedly turned down the role twice, thinking it would be a failure before he finally caved and took the part.
With Hollywood good looks and a unforgettable body, Tom Welling has the attributes to become a huge movie star. However, the step from tv to movies is a very hard move to make. For every television star who has made it, ten have failed. Smallville wont last forever.

He landed a recurring role on the TV series Judging Amy as Rob Meltzer, a karate instructor who develops a relationship with the lead character, played by Amy Brenneman.
