Hollywood Walk of Fame star. In February 2006 Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers agreed to be the headline act at the fifth annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. In July 2006, Petty released a new solo album titled Highway Companion. It debuted at number 4 on the Billboard charts, becoming Petty's highest chart position since the introduction of the Nielsen SoundScan system for tracking album sales in 1991. In 2006, the American Broadcasting Company hired Petty to do the music for its National Basketball Association playoffs coverage.
In early 1981 the upcoming Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album was slated to be the next MCA release with the new list price of $9.98, following Steely Dan's Gaucho and the Xanadu soundtrack. This so-called "superstar pricing" was $1.00 more than the usual list price of $8.98.[1] Petty voiced his objections to the price hike in the press and the issue became a popular cause among music fans. Non-delivery of the album or naming it Eight Ninety-Eight were considered but eventually MCA decided against the price increase.[2]

Tom Petty Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers [S]tarted in Gainesville, Florida before officially forming in Los Angeles. They kicked the musical doldrums of the mid-'70s in the face with their 1976 self-titled debut album. It featured a stripped-down-but-accomplished brand of rock that blended jumpy rhythm & blues rhythms, ringing guitars and keyboards, over which Tom Petty grabbed listeners by their throats with his disarmingly blunt lyrics and extremely direct vocal style. Still, it took America a full year to catch up to the album. "Breakdown" was re-released to radio and became a Top 40 hit in 1977. After word filtered back, the band was creating a firestorm over in England.

With a vintage rock sound that is heavier and more abrasive than Petty and crew, The Black Crowes quickly heated up the Friday night along the lake with extended jams and sharp vocals. The show featured an animated Chris Robinson throughout, and the energy was infectious in the rockabilly of "Shake Your Money Maker" and in the pure rock of "Jealous Again" and "Remedy." Changing things up a bit, a wandering feedback opening to "No Speak No Slave" provided a good contrast to the aforementioned tunes.
Tom Petty was born October 20, 1950 in Gainesville, Florida. Petty was first inspired to play music by Elvis Presley. His first band was called the Sundowners, which later changed to the Epics. The Epics later evolved into Mudcrutch in 1970. Mudcrutch disbanded and Petty reunited with two of the members to form the band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Tom Petty Rolling Stone Magazine American rock and roll master Tom Petty put together his first band in high school and by 1974 left his native Florida behind for the lure of L.A. Renaming his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the L.A. lineup included original members Benmont Te
