It is no surprise that urban-radio heavyweight Tom Joyner's first broadcasting experience came as the result of a social cause. A native of Tuskegee, Ala., Joyner was an active participant in the civil-rights movement at an early age. One afternoon in the 1960s, Joyner and others protested outside a local station that played predominantly white “background music,” as Joyner describes it, for the white-owned shops in the overwhelmingly black town.
Dallas, TX (BlackNews.com 4/4/06) - Tom Joyner, the nationally syndicated radio personality and philanthropist, has launched a major initiative to challenge three historically black colleges and universities to raise more than $200,000 per school. The challenge is designed to broaden and strengthen their efforts to raise money for scholarships, retain students, attract top-notch students, increase their donor base and relocate lost alums.

Hosted by Tom Joyner, the first African American to be elected to the Radio Hall of Fame, the 4-hour show delivers a combination of music, talk, sports, gossip and comedy bits. Tom gets the best in celebrity guests: Bill Clinton, Spike Lee, Wesley Snipes, Babyface, Seal and Oprah Winfrey.

HBCUs interested in holding galas contact Joyner's organization directly. He and his staff then work with each school to help plan and execute the galas. So far, 2003 galas are planned for Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss., Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio and Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY.
Joyner's investment in education is matched only in his business endeavors to entertain and to inform his public. With the show's increased popularity, Joyner expanded into other forms of communication and outreach. In January 2003, he formed REACH Media Inc., which is headquartered in Dallas, and it is the parent company for The Tom Joyner Show, BlackAmericaWeb.com, Tom Joyner Family Reunion and the Tom Joyner (TV) Show. "It is called REACH Media because that is what we do: 'reach' African-Americans."
Celebrities and dignitaries are on The Tom Joyner Morning Show daily. The guest roster proves it! On any given week day you can hear some of the most powerful voices in the African American community and beyond. From President Clinton, Sinbad, Spike Lee, Wesley Snipes, Oprah Winfrey, Evander Holyfield and Mother Love - he has them all.
