To listen to the Joyner show lately has been to swim in an alternate media universe. What Fox News is to CNN—a refuge for the dispossessed—Joyner's radio show is to Fox News and CNN. His show is pitched to African-American listeners with an abiding distrust of the major news media. Since Katrina hit, Jesse Jackson has appeared on Joyner's show to make common cause; New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin and Lt. Gen. Russell Honore have called in to defend themselves. Joyner has begged listeners to donate plus-size clothing, explaining that Size 10 blouses will not fit many of those swimming out of New Orleans. He started his own relief fund, which has raised more than $1.5 million for Samaritans who are housing the displaced.

At times Lee's article reads likeas if she'dnever heard of talk radio -- the most mundane details of Joyner's radio show are greeted with wonderment: "Mr. Joyner’s show blends such interviews with radio staples like news, sweepstakes and comedy. There’s a 'cash call contest' and a humorous soap opera called 'It’s Your World,' about a fictional, prosperous all-black town. Joyner made headlines in 1985 as “The Hardest Working Man in Radio,” when he accepted a morning position at KKDA/Dallas while simultaneously taking an afternoon show at WGCI/Chicago. Although the contracts Joyner originally signed would only have required him to do both shows for five years, he wound up doing both for eight. During that time he logged over seven million frequent- flyer miles. When the run was up, the airline retired two seats in his honor and presented them to him for use in his radio studio.

Unlike Mr. Stern or Mr. Limbaugh, Mr. Joyner does not aspire to shock his audience or to hammer home a partisan position. In Mr. Joyner’s town square on the radio five mornings a week (with a recap on Saturdays offering highlights of the week’s shows), the conversation ranges from speculation about the White House to jokes about Whitney Houston. His guest list in the last year has included former President Bill Clinton; the actors Will Smith and Jamie Foxx; Senator Barack Obama of Illinois; the singers Lionel Richie and Aretha Franklin; the comedian Bill Cosby; the scholars Cornel West and Henry Louis Gates Jr.; Representative Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker; and Bishop T. D. Jakes, the televangelist.
