Tom Hanks is America's favorite movie soldier, according to a Veteran's Day survey by Blockbuster. The two-time Oscar winner, who portrayed Capt. John Miller in "Saving Private Ryan," was chosen by 28 percent of respondents, followed by John Wayne, 20 percent, and Sylvester Stallone, 4 percent.

Starting out as the star of cross dressing sit-com Bosom Buddies, Tom Hanks made a succesful transition to the big screen with fantasy comedy Splash. After starring in a number of comedies, he tried the change to more serious movies. First there was the failed attempt Bonfire of the Vanities. His portrayal of an AIDS victim in Philadelphia won him a Best Acting Oscar and made him one of the most popular actors of the decade. During the nineties he starred in a string of successful movies, landing him the number 1 spot on the biggest box office stars of the nineties list.

Born in California, Tom Hanks grew up in what he calls a fractured family. His parents were pioneers in the development of marriage dissolution law in that state, and Hanks moved around a lot, living with a succession of step-families. No problems, no abuse, no alcoholism -- just a confused childhood. While attending California State University in Sacramento, Hanks performed onstage in "The Cherry Orchard." His professional acting career started in Cleveland, where he interned with the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival.

From All Movie Guide: American leading actor Tom Hanks has become one of the most popular stars in contemporary American cinema. Born July 9, 1956, in Concord, CA, Hanks spent much of his childhood moving about with his father, an itinerant cook, and continually attempting to cope with constantly changing schools, religions, and stepmothers. After settling in Oakland, CA, he began performing in high-school plays. He continued acting while attending Cal State, Sacramento, and left to pursue his vocation full-time. In 1978, Hanks went to find work in New York; while there he married actress/producer Samantha Lewes, whom he later divorced.

Tom moved his family to the San Fernando Valley in California. Bosom Buddies ran for two seasons and 37 episodes. It was cancelled in 1982. That year saw the birth of Samantha and Tom's second child, Elizabeth, and guest television roles for Tom on Happy Days, Family Ties, The Love Boat, and Taxi. He ... made a television movie, Rona Jaffe's Mazes and Monsters. Work became harder and harder to find but Tom's performance on Happy Days brought him an unexpected opportunity.

Tom Hanks... known as Tom Wanks, started out in the middle ages as a camera grip. His feelings for dinosaurs was at the very least nonexistent and at most in violation of several sexual laws of physics and quantum mechanics. The problem was mainly that Hanks, who was payed to give a blow job to the cameraman, managed to appear in 80% of all the shots, thus rendering the entire film useless. Unfortunately the movie studio could not fire him on account of Hanks being a retard in combination with positive discrimination acts that needed to be followed.
