Tom Green: Television
built 199 days ago
Everything about The Tom Green show goes against the standards of what should make a television show a hit. It begins with the star. Tom Green is a 6’3", 140 pound plain looking guy who is a self-described “nerd.” He sings his own theme song. When the camera zooms in at the beginning of the show, viewers see a host who, with the exception of his goatee, appears to be the antithesis of the stereotypical GenX’er or Millennial kid. There are no piercings or tattoos. His hair is short. He wears a jacket and tie.

On February 18, 2001, there was a housefire at the residence of Green and Barrymore. Their dog Flossie woke them around 3:30 a.m. when she barked and "literally banged on their bedroom door." Firefighters estimated damage at $700,000 in the two-story, 3,500 square foot (325 m²) home located north of Beverly Hills. The incident was soon spoofed on the American television show Saturday Night Live with guest host Katie Holmes playing Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon playing Tom Green.[6]
After their first child was born, Mr. Green became head of the theater department at televangelist Jim Bakker's ill-fated Heritage University in North Carolina. They entered that world of clean-shaven Southern evangelicals as "a couple of hippie types from the Jesus movement," said Roger Wilson, a close friend and co-worker there and at Cornerstone Television.
In March 2002, Green returned to television with the Subway Monkey Hour, which aired on MTV in March 2002. Green, in search of fresh territory, brought his man-on-the-street act to Japan, where reactions ranged from polite bemusement to polite apathy to polite intolerance. More recently, Tom voiced a character on Clone High, a show that airs on MTV.

Recently, Green started his own production company -- Bob Green Films -- which has a three-year deal with Fox-based Regency Enterprises for film and television. In June, he plans to launch his own one-hour late night talk show on MTV.

Green was careful, too, to produce a show that is of the Internet, rather than just a television show that happens to be streaming online. Viewers can call in to the show on Green’s home phone line, or via the Internet videophone software Skype. They can upload video clips to Green via YouTube, and if he likes them he may feature them on his site or in a broadcast. Assorted items from the show’s set are auctioned off to fans via eBay. And Green, who’s actually got a surprising amount of credibility in hip hop circles (he was a member of Juno-winning rap group Organized Rhyme in the '90s, and has hosted artists like Jurassic 5 and Too Short on the show), is releasing for download via the site a collection of 12 new rap songs he’s recorded at home.
