Thomas "Tom" Arnold (born March 6, 1959 in Ottumwa, Iowa) is an American actor and comedian. Tom Arnold was a stand-up comic who became a writer for the popular television sitcom Roseanne (which debuted in 1988). He married the show's star, Roseanne Barr, in 1990, attracting media, and especially tabloid, attention due to their sometimes outrageous behavior. Tom Arnold was appointed Chief Executive of Concern Worldwide in October 2001. Concern is Ireland's largest NGO working in emergencies, long term development and advocacy, working in some thirty countries, mainly in Africa and Asia. Prior to working with Concern, he was Assistant Secretary General and Chief Economist in the Irish Department of Agriculture and Food. He was Chairman of the OECD Committee of Agriculture from 1993 to 1998 and Chairman of the Working Group on Agricultural Policies and Markets from 1990 to 1993. When Tom Arnold first came to Moab, in 1969, it wasn't to fill an empty lot with German cars; he came here to start a college. T.K. taught business administration at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, but a tip from a fellow academician led him to Moab. Before Tom Arnold, there was no "higher education" in Grand County. But when he heard that Utah State in Logan was planning to open an extension office in Moab, Tom applied for the position without even seeing the town and was offered the job. As a young man, Tom Arnold went to work at a meat factory. But he dismissed from that job. Arnold told Entertainment Weekly in an interview: “If I hadn’t gotten fired from the meatpacking plant, I . . . would still be working there.” After losing his job, he attended the University of Iowa for a time and became interested in comedy. Arnold started working in clubs around the Midwest. In the early 1980s, he met fellow stand-up talent Roseanne Barr. The two became friends and she invited him to move to Los Angeles and join the writing staff of her self-titled sitcom in 1988.
