Tom Arnold: Happy Endings
built 317 days ago
Most recently serving as co-host of Fox Sports Net's "Best Damn Sports Show Period," Tom Arnold has long been a staple of the movie and television industry. His most recent credits include roles in "Happy Endings" and "Pride." Past movie credits include "True Lies," "Nine Months," and "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery."
In 2000, Tom Arnold added television host to his list of accomplishments, appearing on the Fox Sports Network on Best Damn Sports Show Period. For five years, he served one of the show’s talking heads, adding his own humorous approach to sports news and interviews. After leaving the show in 2005, Arnold received strong reviews for two film projects released that year. He appeared in the dramatic comedy Happy Endings with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jason Ritter and starred and wrote The Kid & I. With his film career on an upswing, Arnold recently appeared in the inspirational drama Pride (2007) and has several more films slated for the release.
Iowa native Tom Arnold was in Iowa City Wednesday to show and promote his new movie "Happy Endings." Arnold held a news conference in the afternoon, then stayed for an evening screening of the movie in the University of Iowa Memorial Union. Arnold plays the father of a gay teenage son in the film.

LISTEN Tavis: 10 years ago, Tom Arnold co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film "True Lies," which means that one day he just might become governor of California. Until then, he's happy talking sports on "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" which airs weeknights on Fox Sports. Tom, nice to see you.

Arnold, who has been in or worked on 40 movies, says "this might be one that you see and you talk about it later." Arnold admits the studio heads tried to convince the director to put another actor in the role. "I saw the list," Arnold says, and it included big names like Michael Douglas and Alec Baldwin. "I said 'Hey, you know, if you can get them, I don't blame ya'...but it came back around and it's been a very, very wonderful thing and it's called 'Happy Endings' -- coincidentally -- and it's certainly been."

Seventy pounds lighter since November thanks to two hours of daily workouts, Arnold, 46, now sports a substantial head of dark hair and says he has never felt healthier. The only reminder of his old persona: jittery palms that never stop rubbing his thighs. The nervous habit is just part of who he is, Arnold says. The actor is surprising critics with his subtly appealing characterization in Happy Endings, which opens Friday.
