Toilet

A roll of toilet paper. Toilet paper is a fairly modern invention, making its debut around 1880 when it was developed by the British Perforated Paper Company. Made of a coarser paper than its modern incarnation, it was sold in boxes of individual squares. In America, the Scott Paper Company made its Waldorf brand toilet paper in rolls as early as 1890. The first rolls were not perforated, and lavatory dispensers had serrated teeth to cut the paper as needed. It was a nearly "unmentionable" product for years, and consumers were often embarrassed to ask for it by name or even be seen buying it. Timid shoppers simply asked for "Two, please," and the clerk presumably knew what they wanted. To keep things discreet, toilet paper was packaged and sold in brown paper wrappers.

Toilet displacement dams are devices, which, unlike the volume displacement devices, reduce the amount of water available per flush by holding a small amount of water out of use. The dams usually consist of two pieces of flexible plastic that are wedged into the tank on either side of the flush valve and act like dams. Water held back by the dams is not able to be used and ... saved each time the toilet is flushed.
A contemporary Japanese squat toilet including toilet slippers. The handwritten sign to the left of the vertical pipe says, "Please squat a bit closer." Toilets in Japan have very similar accessories as most toilets worldwide, including toilet paper, a toilet brush, a sink, etc. However, there are some Japan-specific accessories that are rarely found outside of Japan.
The Miracle Toilet Faucet uses the existing water supply to the toilet, tapping into the fresh water line from the wall. Even homeowners new to do-it-yourself projects can install it with a few common tools in about fifteen minutes. The unit's nozzle rests under the toilet seat and angles downward, giving it a low profile. One simple lever activates the Miracle Toilet Faucet and controls water pressure. The unit is easily cleaned with standard toilet cleansers.

Toilet bowls and tanks are made from a special clay called vitreous china. Vitreous china is a mix of several kinds of clay, called ball clay and china clay, silica, and a fluxing agent. Clays are hardened by first drying in air, then being fired (baked) in a very hot oven called a kiln. Usually a shiny, waterproof coating called a glaze is applied only after a first firing, and the clay is fired a second time. Vitreous china is an exception, in that clay and glaze can be fired together. The whole clay body vitrifies, or turns glassy, so the toilet is actually waterproof and stainproof through its entire thickness.

Because the Miracle Toilet Faucet cleans so efficiently with little additional water use, homeowners will find they need significantly less toilet paper. That's good news for those with septic tanks - and great news for anyone interested in reducing their household expenses or environmental impact.
