Tobey Maguire Tobey Maguire's parents were 18 and 20 - and unwed - when he was born. His father, Vincent Maguire, was a cook and sometime construction worker. His mother, Wendy Brown, was a secretary and aspiring screenwriter. They split two years after his birth. This resulted in moving constantly as a youth, spending time in California, Oregon, and Washington. He quit school in the ninth grade and pursued acting roles.

The black-and-white movie Don's Plum, a low-budget drama featuring the actor and some of his friends (including Tobey Maguire) was filmed between 1995 and 1996. Its release was later blocked in the United States and Canada by DiCaprio and Maguire, who argued they never intended to make it a theatrical feature. Nevertheless, it later premiered on February 10, 2001 in Berlin.
Born a stone's throw from Hollywood, Tobey Maguire began acting in commercials as a boy and had his first film role in This Boy's Life (1994, with Leonardo DiCaprio). He went on to play confused and thoughtful teens in several films, including the trouble-in-suburbia classic The Ice Storm (1997, with Christina Ricci), the dreamy Pleasantville (1998, with Reese Witherspoon) and the literary campus comedy The Wonder Boys (2000, with Michael Douglas). In 2002 he had the high-swinging lead in the hit film Spider-Man, with Kirsten Dunst as his love interest Mary Jane. The actors reunited (along with James Franco and director Sam Raimi) for the sequels Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). Maguire ... starred as jockey Red Pollard in the 2003 film Seabiscuit.

His striking performance handed the actor a Teen Choice Award, two MTV Movie Awards, as well as star status. Initially gaining attention in the sleeper hit The Ice Storm (1997), Maguire went on to draw the public’s attention with his portrayal of thoughtful, modern-day youngster David in Gary Ross’ Pleasantville (1998), where he took home a Saturn Award in 1999. Maguire gathered even more praise when he won a Screen Actors Guild Award for his dazzling portrayal of orphan Homer Wells in The Cider House Rules (1999). In 2000, he nabbed a Toronto Film Critics Association Award after playing enterprising college student James Leer in Wonder Boys (2000, opposite Michael Douglas). In a more recent film, Maguire received wide appreciation when he played half-blind jockey Red Pollard in director Gary Ross’ big screen version Seabiscuit (2003), in which he netted a Screen Actors Guild Award.
