The ATA Scientific Advisory Committee is a group of volunteer researchers and clinicians who review grant applications for tinnitus research funding. After their review, SAC members make recommendations to the ATA Board of Directors on which studies should be funded. Many SAC members are researchers, and several have applied for and received ATA grants, but they must excuse themselves from deliberations on their own submitted grants or on grants from their affiliated hospitals or universities because of conflict of interest
Meyer B. A multicenter randomized double-blind study of Ginkgo Biloba extract versus placebo in the treatment of tinnitus. In Rokan (Ginkgo biloba): Recent Results in Pharmacology and Clinic, ed. EW Funfgeld, New York: Springer-Verlag, 1988, 245-50.
By listening to the therapeutic sound pattern through headphones for just 30 minutes, three times a week* at a convenient, quiet location of the patient’s choosing, patients obtain relief from their tinnitus on an on-going basis. Clinical testing and recently-published scientific studies have shown that this treatment can generate prolonged periods of residual inhibition — the length of time after treatment that patients are symptom-free — of up to a week or more. This is a significant advance, unmatched by any other known tinnitus therapy.
Clinical observations have found that tinnitus is present in approximately one-third of the patients who present with ear pain, fullness, hearing loss, etc. After proper dental therapy is performed, tinnitus is generally relieved.
Acupuncture has been studied as a treatment for tinnitus in several controlled trials. Preliminary trials have reported improvement in symptoms of tinnitus following acupuncture treatment, but this relief was either not permanent or did not reach statistical significance.16 Most trials have shown no advantage of acupuncture treatment over placebo for the treatment of tinnitus.17 18 19 20 21 22 23 A review of clinical trials concluded that acupuncture is not an effective treatment for tinnitus.24
