Tinnitus: Noises
built 814 days ago
Pulsatile tinnitus is usually due to a small blood vessel that is coupled by fluid to your ear drum. It is usually nothing serious and ... untreatable. Nevertheless, rarely pulsatile tinnitus can be caused by more serious problems -- aneurysms, increased pressure in the head (hydrocephalus), and hardening of the arteries. A vascular tumor such as a "glomus" may fill the middle ear, or a vein similar to a varicose vein may make enough noise to be heard.
Approximately 50 percent of all those affected by tinnitus ... suffer from hearing loss and/or hyperacusis (oversensitivity to noise). While these are not the cause of tinnitus, tinnitus often improves when the hearing impairment is treated. These excellent instruments combine the functions of a TCI and a modern, digital hearing aid. In the case of hyperacusis it is important to provide an effective means of limiting the volume.
In many cases, factors contributing to the onset of tinnitus cannot be directly avoided. But, when exposure to loud noise is the cause, you can avoid tinnitus. Once hearing damaged has occurred, it cannot be reversed. Due to the severity of this condition, it is in your best interest to care for your hearing by avoiding exposure to loud noises. Some steps you can take to ensure the health of your hearing and avoidance of noise-induced tinnitus include:

You may find that tinnitus occurs immediately after you have been exposed to a loud noise. Most often, you get mild, temporary tinnitus, but it may be permanent. The length of time your tinnitus lasts and its severity generally increases each time you expose your ears to loud noise. Finally, one day, if you continue to work, play or live around loud sounds, you may end up with permanent (and distressing) tinnitus, not to mention hearing loss.
As discussed in Philosophy, the problem with the therapy of tinnitus is its unpredictability. Although the successful ablation of the identifiable problem in many of these cases should eliminate the problem, often only 50% of patients describe complete relief from the difficulty. The explanation seems to rest with some type of sensitization to the function of the inner ear, auditory nervous system, and the brain, with the resultant head noise, or tinnitus.

Experiences of tinnitus are very common in all age groups, especially following exposure to loud noise... it is unusual for it to be a major problem. There is a widely held misconception that tinnitus is confined to the elderly, but various studies have shown that it can occur at any age, even quite young children. Mild tinnitus is common - about 10 per cent of the population have it all the time and, in up to one per cent of adults, this may affect the quality of their life.
