The Disney Princesses are currently riding high, powered by a strongly focused commercial push, but the iconic Tinkerbell has been a consistently popular image since she first appeared in the 1953 animated film Peter Pan. The character had existed, of course, in J.M. Barrie's novel and play, but Disney gave her a face and form.
