Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26th, 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee to a sharecropper (dad) and Zelma. She always had a good voice, on films she saw families that were happy, and that’s how she wanted hers to be. Her father contantly beated on her mother and one day it became too much, Her mother Zelma and 13 year-old sister, Eileen, left for St. Louis, leaving 10 year-old. Anna to live with her father and maternal grandmother. When Anna was 13, her father remarried and moved to Detroit. In 1955, When Anna was 16, her grandmother died, and she went to live with her mother.

In 1989, Tina Turner released her last album of the 1980s, Foreign Affair. This album sold over 6 million copies worldwide[19]. The album received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal performance at 1989 Annual Grammy Awards. The following year, Steamy Windows, received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal performance. It spawned a variety of different hit singles with the most enduring being the hit "The Best" (often referred to as "Simply the Best"), originally a song on a Bonnie Tyler album. The song peaked at number 15 on the U.S. Hot 100, and peaked at number five in the United Kingdom.

Although Tina Turner continued to tour and record with the group during the early 1970s, her own identity began to emerge both personally and professionally. She released three solo albums and appeared in the rock opera film Tommy as the "Acid Queen." Years of physical and emotional abuse by Ike Turner became too much for her, and she walked out on him and the group during a concert tour stop in Texas in July 1976. Fleeing with only thirty-six cents and a gas station credit card, Turner worked cleaning friends' houses and even living on food stamps while she began putting her life together.
