Timothy Dalton: Living Daylights
built 291 days ago
A main line of Daltons who joined the new Mormon faith began with Thomas Dalton who was christened in Wales in 1732. He married a woman from Ireland then emigrated to Maryland before 1763. By the end of the Revolutionary War (or earlier), Thomas and his family were living in Pennsylvania. Son John married in Bucks County Pennsylvania then moved to Michigan in the early 1800s. From Michigan the family eventually made its way to Utah.
Once to play the part in 1969 for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but Dalton considered himself too young. He was approached once more in 1984 to star in A View To A Kill after Roger Moore talked about leaving, but Dalton's schedule was too busy. Once again Dalton was approached to star in The Living Daylights after Moore's departure, but was tied up with work. Pierce Brosnan was considered the popular choice, but was tied into a contract. By this time Timothy Dalton had more time and so accepted the part.
Production of "The Living Daylights" began in September of that year, and a week later Dalton was introduced as James Bond at a big press conference in Vienna. Dalton took his role of 007 very seriously, he seemed to bring back the more realistic character of Bond from the early Fleming books and in the production of Licence to Kill, writers made several adaptations to the script, to suit his style of acting. In 1990, Dalton decided to hand in his role as James Bond.

Dalton's Bond was firmly routed in reality an "existential nihilism" together with the dress sense he was given. For Licence to Kill [T]hey wanted to put him in pastel colours, he rejected that idea as Bond was something of a plain dresser wanting to fade into the background he was ... British and the British dress sense is to dress down a little. In The Living Daylights he is even put into a three quarter length leather jacket that would be acceptable in any walk of life. That perhaps is the essential description of 007 from the books "able to be accepted in all walks of life", from the spotty youth taxi driver in Thunderball to the realms of high society that comes with being a Commander in the RNVR and having a CMG. Dalton approached the role with that attitude and ended up making two of the best James Bond films in all the series.
Dalton's first outing as 007, The Living Daylights (1987) was successful, and grossed more than the previous two Bond films with Roger Moore, as well as contemporary box-office rivals such as Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. However, his second film, Licence to Kill (1989), although more successful than its predecessor in most markets, did not perform as well at the U.S. box office, in large part due to a lacklustre marketing campaign, after the title of the film was abruptly changed from 'License Revoked'.
A classically trained Shakespearean actor, Dalton has maintained a triple career, appearing regularly on stage, screen, and television. He has starred on the big screen most notably as James Bond in The Living Daylights (1987) and License to Kill (1989), and recently in Time Share (2000). His television credits include the American miniseries Centennial (1978) and Scarlett (1994), and the BBC's Jane Eyre (1983).
