Tim Burton was an animator for Disney before being hired by Paul Reubens to direct Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985). The film was a quirky hit, and Burton went on to make the even quirkier hit Beetlejuice (1988, with Winona Ryder) and the blockbuster Batman (1989, with Michael Keaton in the title role). The success of the Batman series (Burton ... directed Batman Returns in 1992), and the popularity of his distinctively gruesome humor, made Burton one of the hottest Hollywood directors of the 1990s. Since then he's made stop-animation and live action films with a distinctive look, many starring Johnny Depp. His animated features include The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), James and the Giant Peach (1996, based on a story by Roald Dahl) and The Corpse Bride (2005). His films with Depp include Edward Scissorhands (1990, with Alan Arkin), Ed Wood (1994, with Sarah Jessica Parker), Sleepy Hollow (1999, with Christina Ricci), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005, with Depp as Willy Wonka) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007, with Sacha Baron Cohen).

Tim Burton (born August 25, 1958) is an American artist and film maker. He got his start as an animator for Walt Disney, but soon moved on making his own kinds of films and projects. He has an individual style; the films that he makes are creative and often based on events that would not happen in real life. For example the main character in "Edward Scissorhands" is a young man who has scissors instead of hands. His films include:

Despite his contrarian artiste nature and indie filmmaker persona, director Tim Burton helmed some of the biggest blockbusters in Hollywood history. With his roots in drawing and animation, Burton crafted over his career distinctly designed films that reflected the gothic horror influences of his youth. Starting with “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure†(1985), Burton quickly developed a reputation for a surreal artistic vision that often overshadowed narrative necessities. But his films were financially successful, leading to him directing the first two installments of the lucrative Dark Knight series, “Batman†(1989) and “Batman Returns†(1992). With “Ed Wood†(1994)... Burton finally earned the respect of critics with his comically optimistic look at a befuddling filmmaker (Johnny Depp) prone to cross-dressing and making bad movies. Further cementing his reputation as a visual artist of the highest caliber, Burton lent his dark, deft touch to the likes of “Sleepy Hollow†(1999), “Big Fish†(2003) and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street†(2007), the latter of which finally earned Burton deserved award recognition – a satisfying result for an outsider director who nonetheless was one of Hollywood’s most admired filmmakers.

It's a sad fact that, as Tim Burton's films have become more interesting post-Batman, they've been increasingly less successful at the box office. MA! continues that trend, as well as Burton's love-affair with Ed Wood. It's his first attempt at wild and crazy comedy since Beetlejuice and while it's not quite as good as that film it's certainly not a failure. There's no reason why it couldn't have made a lot more money in the U.S. if the marketing people hadn't screwed up. It did do better in Europe, though.

Tim Burton was raised in Burbank, California. He spent most of his childhood as a recluse, drawing cartoons and watching old movies (he was especially fond of films with Vincent Price). When he was in the ninth grade, his artistic talent was recognized by a local garbage company when he won a prize for an anti-litter poster he designed. The company placed this poster on all of their garbage trucks for a year. After graduation from high school, he attended California Institute of the Arts. Like so many others who graduated from that school, Burton's first job was as an animator for Disney.

[R]eleased in 1993, Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” was directed by Henry Selick (”James and the Giant Peach”), and based on a story and characters by Tim Burton. The film follows the earnest-but-misguided adventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved Pumpkin King, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday.
