Tim Burton pays homage to the stop-motion animation technique with this genius of a movie. It may be too dark for some, but it is pure TB, right down the the characters removing their limbs.
Burton achieved his first significant success with the film Pee Wee's Big Adventure. actor Paul Rubens had been introduced to Burton's Frankenweenie by Warner Brothers executive Bonni Lee and immediately wanted Burton to direct the film. The movie was a big success but Burton took a break from film and directed episodes of Faerie Tale Theater and Alfred Hitchcock Presents before returning to to film three years later with Beetle Juice. Beetlejuice, a comedic horror film starred Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, and Michael Keaton in the title role. The film was a big success and Warner Brothers offered him the film adaptation of Batman. Batman.
It wasn't long ... before Burton received his first movie deal, working on Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985). An infectious, intricately designed road movie built around TV personality Pee-Wee Herman, it received poor reviews, but with its chaotic and absurd comedic elements it made audiences giggle enough to make a good deal of money. This commercial success gave Burton a little more freedom in his selection of screenplays. He finally opted for Beetlejuice (1988), a black comedy about a dead couple disturbed in the haunting of their house by a snobbish city family intent on redecorating. Despite a lukewarm response, Beetlejuice became one of 1988's sizeable hits, no doubt due to its unconventional structure and sprinklings of dazzling genius, such as Burton's exuberant mix of slapstick horror and social satire, and in no small measure due to Michael Keaton's wonderfully childish performance.
Beetlejuice was directed by Tim Burton, first released in the USA on March 30, 1988, and produced by The Geffen Film Company for Warner Bros. Pictures. It features two recently deceased ghosts, Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) and his wife, Barbara, (Geena Davis), who seek the help of an obnoxious bio-exorcist, Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), to remove the Deetz family-yuppies who recently moved from the city and now occupy their old house. The Deetz family consists of Charles (Jeffrey Jones); his second wife, Delia (Catherine O'Hara); and moody goth teenage daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder).

Despite being unknown to the public, Burton's projects attracted the attention of the film industry, and after seeing Frankenweenie, TV-host/Actor Paul Reubens (better known as Pee-Wee Herman) hired Burton to direct the movie rendition of his TV show. The movie, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), was made on a budget of $7 million and grossed more than $40 million at the box office. Burton was a lifelong fan of the band Oingo Boingo and asked member Danny Elfman to provide the music for the film. Since then Elfman has provided the score for all but one Burton film, Ed Wood, which was scored by Howard Shore.
