Tim Burton: Johnny Depp
built 645 days ago
Tim Burton returns to the dark but fanciful animated style of The Nightmare Before Christmas with this stop-motion black comedy. Victor (voice of Johnny Depp) lives in a small European village in the 19th century, where he is pledged to marry Victoria (voice of Emily Watson), a partnership arranged by their parents. The two only meet the day before their scheduled nuptials, and Victor performs disastrously in the wedding rehearsal. Later that evening, while he is walking through the woods and hopelessly practicing his vows, he puts Victoria's wedding band on what looks like a branch. Victor quickly discovers this was a big mistake; as it happens, he has put the ring on the skeletal finger of the enchanted Corpse Bride (voice of Helena Bonham Carter), who then whisks him off to a dark and mysterious netherworld where they are now married. Victor is frightened in the land of the dead, and even realizes that he has fallen in love with his true fiancée Victoria, so he searches for a way back to his own world.

In between the two “Batman" movies, Burton helmed "Edward Scissorhands" (1990), an unique fable about a man-made boy (Johnny Depp) whose creator (Vincent Price) dies before attaching hands to his body. Visually, the pastel plasticity of suburbia contrasted sharply with the Gothic angles of the scientist's mountaintop home, just as that day-glo community's superficial welcome vanished in the face of mob frenzy when Edward's differences became too threatening for the close-knit society. As the title character, Depp was extremely effective in his nearly mute, wide-eyed performance, and Burton's mentor Price provided a distinct emotional context in his cameo as the inventor. Despite his success, Burton remained a misunderstood outsider, while "Edward Scissorhands," a moderate hit in commercial terms, went on to become the movie that remained closest to his heart. Burton returned to animation as producer and creator of "Tim Burton's 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'" (1993), the first full length stop-motion animated film produced by Disney. Burton first came up with the idea while employed by the studio in the early 1980s, though it spent the next decade languishing in development hell.

In 1990, Burton co-wrote (with Caroline Thompson) and directed Edward Scissorhands, which started his collaboration with Johnny Depp. Depp, a teen idol at the end of the 80s due primarily to his work on the hit TV series 21 Jump Street, was cast in the title role of Edward, who was the creation of an eccentric and old fashioned inventor (played by Vincent Price, in his last appearance on screen before his death). Edward looked human, but because unfinished, was left with scissors in the place of hands. Set in suburbia, the film is largely seen as Burton's autobiography of his own childhood in Burbank's suburb. Price at one point said, "Tim is Edward." Johnny Depp has ... made a similar comment in the foreword to Mark Salisbury's book, Burton on Burton, regarding his first meeting with Burton over the casting of the film.

The combination of iconoclastic director Tim Burton and the always diverse Johnny Depp makes memorable cinema, and the pair clearly brings out the best in each other. Sweeney Todd, Burton's stylish adaptation of the Sondheim musical, is no exception, and maybe the high point of both careers. Paul Fischer caught up with both in London recently.

In 1989, Burton married German artist Lena Gieseke. They divorced shortly after the filming of Batman Returns. Burton was engaged to Lisa Marie from 1992-2001. Currently, he is engaged to Helena Bonham Carter (since 2001). They have a son, Billy-Ray Burton, born in October 2003, whose godfather is Burton's friend Johnny Depp. In August 2007, they announced that they will be having another baby due in December of the same year.
