Tim Burton: Ed Wood
built 658 days ago
After finally seeing his dream project realised with the feature length stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas, Burton returned to smaller filmmaking with his next project, Ed Wood. An affectionate tribute to the supposed worst filmmaker of all time, it was not a hit at the box office, but won Burton the best reviews of his career, as well as two Oscars. It was followed by an indirect homage to Wood's films, Mars Attacks! The film was a disappointment at the box office, and scorned by many critics, but has gained a cult status over the years. Burton made something of a comeback three years later with his first real horror film, Sleepy Hollow.

By the end of Edward, Burton finally agreed to direct a sequel to Batman on the condition that he would be granted total control. The result was Batman Returns, which featured Keaton returning as the Dark Knight, Danny De Vito (as the Penguin), Michelle Pfeiffer (as Catwoman), and Christopher Walken. The movie's dark and gothic feel, as well as the S&M styling of Catwoman's costume left audiences confused and puzzled, which led to a lower box office hit. This was compounded by Burton's decision to focus the storyline more on the villains instead of Batman (though this was ... somewhat true of the previous film). Batman Returns grossed $160 million, much less than expected, and Burton left the Batman franchise from this point on (though he returned as a producer for Batman Forever (1995), a movie which he said had a title "like a tattoo you get when you're on drugs").

Burton's visual sense and off-the-wall presentation are unmistakable and infectious, but mainstream moviemaking is ... about telling a story, and shallow scripts have been Burton's recurring weakness. Most of his movies are kind of like Elton John without Bernie Taupin, or Marilyn Monroe in a mud mask and curlers. Danny Elfman's music deserves as much credit for setting the needed mood and character development in Burton's films as any actor. Elfman has scored all of Burton's features, except Ed Wood.

Rather than jump into making another blockbuster, Burton used his new clout to get an extremely personal project greenlit by 20th Century Fox. Edward Scissorhands was the first time Burton had full creative control over a feature film, having written the story and ... produced the movie. The film was a hit with moviegoers and critics, and marked the beginning of Burton being taken seriously as an artist.

In a February 2006 interview, Burton debunked rumors of Beetlejuice 2, Edward Scissorhands 2, and The Nightmare Before Christmas 2. In that same interview, he ... expressed interest in an Edgar Allan Poe film in the near future. [4] However, this biographical film is set to be directed by Michael Sporn and animated and is set for a release in 2008. The film will be entitled Poe.
