[M]ost of all, the Tigers have some terrific young pitchers. Jeremy Bonderman, 23, who had a record of 6 wins and 19 losses in 2003, is now 10-4 and among the American League leaders in strikeouts. Nate Robertson, 28, has been solid, and 23-year-old Justin Verlander has been so spectacular, with a record of 11-4, that he might be the league's Rookie of the Year. Reliever Joel Zumaya, 21, has a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and averages more than one strikeout per inning.

The Tigers (4-0) had 14 hits and four home runs, including three in the bottom of the seventh inning from freshman Kyle Parker, Wilson Boyd and freshman John Nester. First baseman Ben Paulsen homered in the first inning.

The Tigers proved unable to build upon their 1987 division title. In 1988, the team spent much of the season in first place in the AL East, only to slump late in the season and finish 88-74, one game behind division-winning Boston. In 1989 the team collapsed to a 59-103 record, worst in the majors. The franchise then attempted to rebuild around a power-hitting lineup, with Cecil Fielder, Rob Deer and Mickey Tettleton joining Trammell and Whitaker in the lineup. In 1990, Fielder led the American League with 51 home runs (becoming the first player to hit 50 since George Foster in 1977), and finished second in the voting for AL Most Valuable Player. He hit 44 home runs in 1991, and would hit at least 28 in the next four seasons.

The Tigers are off to a good start to the 2007 season. Over the weekend they won 5 games in the 3rd Annual Cancer Awareness Tournament. Weather stop the tournament today. They are hitting .331 as a team, with six guys hitting over .350. The pitchers have an ERA of 2.87, with 6 different guys with wins. Brian Edelen is the only pitcher with two starts and two wins.

In 1983, the Tigers were bought by Domino's Pizza mogul Tom Monaghan. The following year, the team, managed by Sparky Anderson, won the World Series. Monaghan sold the club to business rival Mike Ilitch, owner of the Little Caesar's pizza chain in 1992. He oversaw the move of the club to new Comerica Park from Tiger Stadium, but the team has finished below .500 for more than a decade. In 2003, Alan Trammell, who was a shortstop for the Tigers in the 1980s, took over as manager of the club. In his first season, the team lost 119 games, one shy of the modern single season record.
