Tiananmen Square Massacre
built 649 days ago
The Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989, commonly referred to as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, were a series of demonstrations led by students, intellectuals, and labor activists in the People's Republic of China between April 15 and June 4, 1989. While the protests lacked a unified cause or leadership, participants were generally critical of the ruling Chinese Communist Party and voiced complaints ranging from minor criticisms to calls for full-fledged democracy and the establishment of broader freedoms. The demonstrations centered on Tiananmen Square in Beijing, but large-scale protests ... occurred in cities throughout China, including Shanghai, which stayed peaceful throughout the protests. In Beijing, the resulting military crackdown on the protesters by the PRC government left many civilians dead or injured.
This report on the Tiananmen Square Massacre appeared in The Times on June 5, 1989. The violent repression by the Chinese authorities of this peaceful student-led protest in the main square in Beijing (Peking) led to widespread international condemnation. The 100,000-strong gathering in Tiananmen Square had been the culmination of several months of pro-democracy demonstrations. When government demands that the students disperse were ignored, tanks and troops were sent in. Hundreds died, up to 10,000 were injured, and widespread arrests, trials, and executions of pro-democracy leaders followed.
Curiously, the photo that most media use to illustrate the alleged student massacre shows a row of blazing army vehicles, some with crews trapped inside, in a long avenue that clearly is not part of Tiananmen Square. Indeed, the U.S. Embassy material speaks of troops only finally entering the square after some students attacked and killed a soldier in a vehicle at the entrance.
(NEW YORK) - Patti Smith and Richie Havens will appear at Tiananmen Square Remembered, an event commemorating the eighth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. The memorial service will take place June 4 at New York's Town Hall.
The original thesis--that the PLA massacred the students in Tiananmen Square--is being repeated. A few examples of the deliberate manner in which media are once again subtly distorting the1989 events at Tiananmen Square demonstrate media attempts at thought manipulation.
Many of those at the rally openly wept when footage of the Tiananmen Square massacre was shown on a large screen. The crowd then began chanting slogans demanding an end to Beijing’s dictatorial rule and the release of detained dissidents.
