According to the Guinness World Records, Thriller is the world's best-selling album of all time. Sales of the album are reported at 104 million copies.[3] The album is ... notable for being one of only three albums to remain in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for one full year (along with Falling Into You by Celine Dion and Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette), spending 80 consecutive weeks in the top 10, 37 of which were at number one. Thriller is also the first album of only three in history to produce seven Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles, and the first and to date only album to be the best-selling album of two years (1983 and 1984) in the United States, according to Billboard. The album continues to sell an estimated 60,000 units in the United States per year.[4]

The "Thriller" album probably only had three million-selling singles. When the RIAA lowered its certification standards in 1989 to 1/2 million for gold and 1 million for platinum, record companies could then up their former gold singles to platinum under the new standard. But Sony only had three of the four gold singles from "Thriller" certified as platinum. "The Girl is Mine" remained gold. Presumably this is because the single did ship a million copies to retailers at the time of release, which earned it its initial gold award, but it did not actually sell a million at retail, and the subsequent returned stock made it ineligible for the new platinum certification many years later.

With first week's sales in the United States totaling 165,805 units, Thriller 25 enters the Billboard Top Pop Catalog chart at #1. (During the past 52 week period, the average first week's sales for an album hitting #1 on the Top Pop Catalog chart has been 16.6 thousand pieces; Thriller 25 entered the chart with 10x that number. Because of a technicality in the rules of Billboard charting, Thriller 25 is ineligible to chart on the Top 200. Based on first week's sales, Thriller 25, if eligible, would have entered the Top 200 at #2, nestled between Jack Johnson at #1 and Amy Winehouse at #3.)

In 2008 Thriller 25, a special 25th anniversary edition of Thriller, was released. The re-recorded album debuted at #2 on the Top Comprehensive Albums chart, where catalog titles mix with current best-sellers. This made it the highest-charting catalog album in the history of the Top Comprehensive Albums survey. Despite selling 166,000 copies in its debut week, it was not eligible for the main album chart as Billboard considered it to be a catalog or oldies album, and Billboard publishes a special chart just for catalog albums.
