Thriller: Albums
built 623 days ago
In addition to more than 100 million copies sold, seven Top Ten singles, seven Grammys and eight American Music Awards, Thriller revolutionized the way music videos were made through storytelling. Furthermore, the album enabled Jackson to tear down racial barriers; his music videos were among the very first starring a black artist to air in heavy rotation on MTV. And those aren't the only reasons why Thriller is credited with transforming Jackson from a perceived bubble-gum pop singer to a musical genius.

The legendary Quincy Jones produced the follow up to Michael’s Off the Wall, the album that turned the sugary sweet lead of the Jackson 5 into a solo pop icon. Together, they created a brand new sound. The pop scene is ever changing, but Quincy Jones’ work set the bar high and laid the groundwork for superstar creators Timbaland and Pharrell. Thriller 25 kicks off with the original lineup. The classics - “Billie Jean,” Beat It” and “the timeless “Thriller” - are there as usual, but the understated tracks seem to captivate even more the second time around.

The 'Thriller' album cover As with all works that jump-start history, it's hard to remember what things were like before "Thriller" came barreling along. Jackson's album carved out a sound, courtesy of producer Quincy Jones, that virtually defined '80s style and production. Such songs as "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" housed rhythms and textures like none before. And the songs begat videos that greatly elaborated that emerging art form.
