Thomas Jefferson: Garden Book
built 200 days ago
Catalog of Library of Thomas Jefferson In Thomas Jefferson's day, most libraries were arranged alphabetically. But Jefferson preferred to arrange his by subject. He chose Lord Bacon's table of science, the hierarchy of Memory (History), Reason (Philosophy) and Imagination (Fine Arts) to order his arrangement of books by subject with some modifications. The resulting arrangement as illustrated in the Nicholas Trist (1800-1870) copy of Jefferson's library catalog for 1815 is a combination of subject and chronology. In practice... Jefferson shelved his books by size.

A man of broad, studied interests, Thomas Jefferson’s passions dwelt in architecture, gardening, music, wine and food. Though Jefferson never cooked, he passed recipes along to chefs and friends frequently. Some if his admirers went so far as to describe Jefferson at that time, “America’s Leonardo da Vinci.”
Among the vegetables in Thomas Jefferson's garden was the English pea, considered to be his favorite. He grew fifteen types of the English pea, and his frequent jottings on the vegetable in his Garden Book suggest that he paid particular attention to it, happily noting when 'peas come to table.' By staggering the planting of peas, Jefferson was able to eat them fresh from the garden from the middle of May to the middle of July.
