built 232 days ago
Born on February 11th, 1847 in Milan, Ohio, Thomas Alva Edison was the youngest of 7 children. At the age of 7 Thomas's family moved to Port Huron, Michigan where he lived until he was old enough to move out on his own. Thomas took a job selling newspapers, candy and other miscellaneous items on a train at the age of 13. One day, as he was running to catch the train, a trainman reached out and pulled him aboard by his ear. Edison immediately felt something in his head snap and began to go deaf. The loss of hearing caused Edison to take up reading as a main hobby.

Edison Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio. He was the youngest of seven children born to Samuel Edison Jr. and Nancy Elliott Edison. When Thomas Edison started school, the schoolteacher considered the famous inventor to be a bit dull. After three months of schooling, one day the teacher called Thomas an "addled" (confused) student. Thomas hurried home and told his mother. When she went to the schoolhouse to talk to the teacher, they got into a heated discussion and the teacher told Mrs. Edison that Thomas was not teachable.
Photograph of Edison Like Ben Franklin, Thomas Alva Edison was both a scientist and an inventor. Born in 1847, Edison would see tremendous change take place in his lifetime. He was ... to be responsible for making many of those changes occur. When Edison was born, society still thought of electricity as a novelty, a fad. By the time he died, entire cities were lit by electricity. Much of the credit for that progress goes to Edison.

His mother educated Edison at home. At the age of twelve he vowed to read the entire contents of the Detroit Public Library, foot by foot. By age ten Edison had read fifteen feet, including Newton's Principia, Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, Hume's History of England and, significantly, Thomas Paine's Age of Reason: "I can still remember the flash of enlightenment that shone from his pages." As for education generally, Edison said, "I do not believe that any type of religion should ever be introduced into the public schools of the United States."
