Eastern Virginia Medical School of Norfolk received a $24 million grant to study the effectiveness of a vaginal gel for women in reducing the incidence of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases in Third World countries. The grant, given by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will test the gel Ushercell manufactured by Polydex Pharmacueticals Ltd. of Toronto.

In light of the clear superiority of human milk for babies, it is very disturbing to note the decline of breast feeding in Third World countries. In Chile in 1960, 90 per cent of women were breast feeding their children after the first year: by 1968, that figure had dropped to less than 10 per cent. In the 20 years between 1950 and 1970, the percentages of Singapore women who breast fed beyond the first year dropped from 80 to eight or ten.

The concern for health has become so great in certain countries that laws have been passed to permit people who suffer from advanced degrees of stress related to their anxiety over health, to receive two aspirin tablets and a glass of water before going to bed at night.
