The ‘Evolution and Theology of Cooperation’ research project at Harvard University is a three-year interdisciplinary undertaking formed to discuss the implications of the evolutionary phenomenon of ‘cooperation’ for the understanding of the relation of the evolutionary processes and classic theism(s). Given that ‘cooperation’ is now seen to be a ‘natural’ phenomenon, how does this fact cause us to rethink the basic metaphors of Darwinian theory, and how does it relate to the emergence, in cultural evolution, of various theories of ethical normativity, including those that appeal to ‘divine command’? How are traditional arguments for the existence of God to be re-thought in the light of game theory’s explication of the emergence of ‘cooperation’? And how is ‘cooperation’ to be defined analytically, and distinguished from closely-related terms such as ‘altruism’, ‘love’, and ‘self-sacrifice’? Can all these phenomena be regarded as ‘evolutionary’ developments, and if so in what sense?

The Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology (EIIT) is a distance-education pastoral and deaconess training program for immigrants sponsored by Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and LCMS World Mission. Many students work full-time secular jobs and serve in their individual pastoral and deaconal ministries while enrolled in the program. They are mentored by their local pastor and were recommended for the program through their districts. Students spend one week together each year on the seminary campus in intensive classes and seminars.

Adi Shankara (centre), 788 to 820, founder of Advaita Vedanta, one of the major schools of Hindu philosophy. Theology has a significantly problematic position within Academia that is not shared by any other subject. Most universities founded before the modern era grew out of the church schools and monastic institutions of Western Europe during the High Middle Ages (e.g. University of Bologna, Paris University and Oxford University). They were founded to train young men to serve the church in Theology and Law (often Church or Canon law). At such universities, theological study was incomplete without Theological practice, including preaching, prayer and celebration of the Mass. Ancient Universities still maintain some of these links (e.g. having chapels and chaplains) and are more likely to teach Theology than other institutions.
Theology Schools Theology schools can prepare students for all professions and vocations involved with theological responsibility: pastors, chaplains, educators, deacons, assistant ministers, music leaders, missionaries, and administrative staff. Good theology programs will include biblical studies, church history, ethics, and practical theology. Students who have completed these programs will have improved their chances of furthering their education and practicing in their chosen fields of [R]eligion.
