Operated as a nature preserve and memorial, 88-acre Theodore Roosevelt Island was for most of the 19th century known as Mason's Island, after the family that owned it from 1717 to about 1834. It was later known as Analostan Island. During the Civil War, the island was taken over by the Union Army; an African-American unit, the lst U.S. Colored Troops, was stationed here. Mason's home deteriorated, and the island became the site of outings for Georgetowners and events sponsored by the Columbia Athletic Club.

Theodore Roosevelt Island is an 88-acre site maintained by the National Park Service, George Washington Memorial Parkway. Over 2 miles of trails are on the island that wind through upland forests,swamps and marshland. This is beautiful place to hike, birdwatch and identify wildflowers. Guided hikes can be given upon request. Please contact the George Washington Memorial Parkway for information.

Dedicated to the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt Island is located on the Potomac River. The island is not accessible by cars or bicycles, and can only be reached by crossing a footbridge near the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The island itself, is home to a memorial designed by Eric Gugler. The memorial is composed of four large monolith stones engraved with famous quotations by President Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt Island is located just across the Potomac River from downtown Washington DC. This is probably one of the best park and bike locations due to it's close proximity to most major bike paths.

When Theodore Roosevelt was 15, his father established the family's summer residence at Oyster Bay, and the boy spent his vacations exploring the fields and woodlands on Cove Neck. Three years after graduating from Harvard, young Roosevelt purchased the hill on Cove Neck where his home now stands. A barn was the only building on the tree-barren hill. For this property he paid $10,000 in cash and assumed a 20-year mortgage for the $20,000 balance. The total area of the property was 63 hectares (155 acres), of which he kept 38 (95), selling the rest to relatives.

Theodore Roosevelt ... saved the Grizzly Bear. He had saved so many of them that some people decided to make a bear. At first they didn’t know what to name the bear. Then, someone finally came up with a name. The Teddy Bear was his name. Theodore’s actions allow generations today and future generations to see some of these animals.
