Theodore Roosevelt: Tr
built 235 days ago
The second of the four children of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt , Theodore Roosevelt (commonly referred to by his initials, TR), was nicknamed "Teedie". TR suffered from asthma and terrible nearsightedness, conditions which his father urged him to supercede by saying, "You have the mind, but not the body; you must make your body." To help his son, Theodore Sr. built a gym at their home where "Teedie" developed a constitution which would later be referred to as "strong as a Bull Moose". In his youth, Theodore (who disliked being called Teddy), travelled with his family throughout Europe where he perfected his command of French and German.
Roosevelt left his civilian Navy post to form the famous "Rough Riders" Regiment Theodore Sr. had a tremendous influence on his son. Of him Roosevelt wrote, "My father, Theodore Roosevelt, was the best man I ever knew. He combined strength and courage with gentleness, tenderness, and great unselfishness. He would not tolerate in us children selfishness or cruelty, idleness, cowardice, or untruthfulness."[10] Roosevelt's sister later wrote, "He told me frequently that he never took any serious step or made any vital decision for his country without thinking first what position his father would have taken."[11]

Nashville Tennessee News sketch of Theodore Roosevelt inauguration minus the customary Bible. Inauguration photos were not allowed after a rival photographer unceremoniously knocked down another's camera. Theodore Roosevelt promised to continue McKinley's program, and at first he worked closely with McKinley's men. His 20,000-word address to the Congress in December 1901, asked Congress to curb the power of trusts "within reasonable limits." They did not act but Roosevelt did, issuing 44 lawsuits against major corporations; he was called the "trust-buster."
Of a prosperous and distinguished family, Theodore Roosevelt was educated by private tutors and traveled widely. He was a delicate youth, and his determined efforts to overcome this had a marked effect on his character. After graduating (1880) from Harvard, he studied law at Columbia.
June 30, 1898 proved to be one of the most significant dates in the life Theodore Roosevelt. As he advanced toward the San Juan River, a Spanish shell burst overhead, with shrapnel hitting Roosevelt in the wrist, raising a hefty lump. The blast wounded several other Rough Riders and regulars. Roosevelt and the Rough Riders formed the head of the their brigade and were ordered by Wood to follow the First Brigade and ford the San Juan River. The temperature rose to over one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. In the stifling heat, the Rough Riders waited as the advance stalled, the troopers finding whatever cover they could from the enemy fire.
