While on a journey to buy provisions, Theodora was instructed by her abbot to stay at the Enata Monastery if there was cause for delay. There was ... a young woman staying at the guest house of this same monastery. She tried to seduce St. Theodora, not realizing the monk before her was a woman. Discouraged that she had been rejected, the girl undertook a liaison with another guest and became pregnant. Ultimately, the father of this shameless girl began to question his daughter about the father of the child. The girl told him the father was the Monk Theodore, which was immediately reported to the abbot of St. Theodora’s monastery.

Theodora was born in Constantinople to a lower class family. She began working on stage at a young age. She escaped from the live of an actress by becoming the mistress of a rising politician who took her to Africa where he was serving as governor of Libyan Pentapolis. When he tired of her, she made her way to Alexandria, where it is believed that she converted to Christianity. Later she was recruited as a spy for Justinian, which may be how they met. At the time of their meeting, Justinian was already middle-aged, but not yet an emperor.

When she was 16, Theodora traveled to northern Africa as the companion of an official named Hecebolus. She stayed with him for almost four years before heading back to Constantinople. On the way, she settled briefly in Alexandria, the luxurious capital of Egypt. While there, she adopted the beliefs of Monophysitism. This form of Christianity held that Jesus of Nazareth was wholly divine, not both human and divine as orthodox Christian believed. Because they went against accepted Church teachings, Monophysites were scorned by other Christians.

Theodora's writing style was pleasing and personal to the reader, and she was able to reach an audience outside the academy. "In The Inland Whale she retold a number of California Indian folktales in her own idiom, having selected, not the best-known tales, but those with a heroine and those bearing the stamp of one individual’s originality" (Gacs 1989:190).
