Theodora: Works
built 276 days ago
Theodora was a gentle soul, a member of the fated shire of Loch Dorr in Avacal. She received her Award of Arms in June 8 AS 32 / 1997 at yet another of Loch Dorr's wonderful Coronet tourneys. She taught ithra classes and worked in the kitchen, a quiet smile often in the background.
A native of Bulgaria, Theodora came in the US to achieve a better future. After a few years working with people she realized how much she enjoys it and helping people to achieve the American Dream would bring her plenty of joy.
A mosaic-like halo is embroidered on the runner, the plate resting in its center, which references the halo in the Ravenna mosaic and associates Theodora with both her imperial reign and her religious work. Embroidered on the illuminated capital "T" is the dome from one of the most celebrated architectural monuments of Theodora's reign, Hagia Sophia, built in 530. The back of the runner is finished with a half-shell design, referencing the imperial collars worn during Theodora's reign.
Handel wrote Theodora during his last period of composition, his Indian summer. He was sixty-four years old when he began working on it in June 1749. He had written the oratorios Solomon and Susanna the previous year. Theodora would be his second-to-last oratorio.

Handel did not write Theodora to be staged, even if, in his sense, drama means that it is, by and large, eminently stageable. Emmanuelle Haïm took a dramatic approach to the work, giving it a strong dramatic impetus. This helped immeasurably in a work that is quite expansive and takes its time over things (three acts of 80, 60 and 50 minutes each).

Her portrait given here is based on unparalleled research and depicts not only the scandalous side, but ... Theodora's strenghtof character, her good work, and her support for the persecuted. Sprung as she was from the lower class, was she also a champion of the downtrodden and scourge of the privileged?
