Not long after the formation of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier was portrayed as harboring unspoken romantic love for his young student, Jean Grey. Note the panel below in which he touches her arm and hand, and afterward thinks about this love that he dare not voice.

The movie starts off 20 years ago with Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who is not in a wheelchair,and Erik Lensherr (Ian McKellan), arriving at the Grey residence. They are there to meet a prospective student, Jean Grey. The CGI done on Stewart and McKellan is awesome as they do look very much younger.

The snow outside Scott and Jean's house has been cleared in the shape of a Phoenix emblem again. Scott and Hank spend a couple of pages talking about this, in what seems laying the groundwork for a reversal of the "Jean wasn't Phoenix" retcon of the 1980s.

Anyone familiar with the comic knew this was a delicious cliffhanger: Jean Grey would rise again as the unstable Phoenix. And anyone rooting for Janssen to get a chance to do some scintillating acting knew ``Last Stand" would be her moment.
