During World War II, intelligence consumers realized that the production of basic intelligence by different components of the US Government resulted in a great duplication of effort and conflicting information. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 brought home to leaders in Congress and the executive branch the need for integrating departmental reports to national policymakers. Detailed and coordinated information was needed not only on such major powers as Germany and Japan, but ... on places of little previous interest. In the Pacific Theater, for example, the Navy and Marines had to launch amphibious operations against many islands about which information was unconfirmed or nonexistent. Intelligence authorities resolved that the United States should never again be caught unprepared.

The most recent version of the CIA World Factbook uses HTTPS to access its web pages. As such, WebService::CIA requires Crypt::SSLeay which suffers from the usual cryptographic export restriction mumbo jumbo. Sorry about that.

Now that so many people are using the World Wide Web as their primary access to the Internet, it's not surprising that interest groups are springing up on a number of websites. These are similar to newsgroups in that you go to the website to be able to use them, but they come in many formats. The one thing they have in common with the other kinds of discussion groups is that they bring people of similar interests together to share ideas, questions, and information about those interests. Soviet occupation following World War II led to the formation of a Communist "peoples republic" in 1947 and the abdication of the king. The decades-long rule of dictator Nicolae CEAUSESCU, who took power in 1965, and his Securitate police state became increasingly oppressive and draconian through the 1980s. CEAUSESCU was overthrown and executed in late 1989. Former Communists dominated the government until 1996, when they were swept from power by a fractious coalition of centrist parties. Currently, the Social Democratic Party forms a nominally minority government, which governs with the support of the opposition Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania. Bucharest must address rampant corruption, while invigorating lagging economic and democratic reforms, before Romania can achieve its hope of joining the European Union.

However, there is no single authority governing the quality of resources on the Net, nor is there a single indexing strategy or way to find the resources.
