built 645 days ago
The CIA World Factbook is published annually in August by the Central Intelligence Agency for the use of US Government officials. Entries for most of the countries and significant regions of the world include color maps, flags, and hundreds of facts organized under the following major headings: Geography, People, Government, Economy, Transportation, Communications and Defense. This is an excellent resource for academic, business, travel, and missions research.

The Central Intelligence Agency of the United States publishes annually a world factbook, with basic almanac style information about the various countries of the world. The factbook gives a 2 to 3 page summary of the demographics, location, tellecommunications capacity, government, industry, military capability, etc. of almost all countries in existence.
The CIA World Factbook is one of the best geographic resources on the Internet. It is a collection of maps, flags, and comprehensive geographic information for every country and territory in the world (over 270 entries).
The need for more comprehensive basic intelligence in the postwar world was well expressed in 1946 by George S. Pettee, a noted author on national security. He wrote in The Future of American Secret Intelligence (Infantry Journal Press, 1946, page 46) that world leadership in peace requires even more elaborate intelligence than in war. "The conduct of peace involves all countries, all human activities - not just the enemy and his war production."

Arawak Indians inhabited the islands when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the New World on San Salvador in 1492. British settlement of the islands began in 1647; the islands became a colony in 1783. Since attaining independence from the UK in 1973, The Bahamas have prospered through tourism and international banking and investment management. Because of its geography, the country is a major transshipment point for illegal drugs, particularly shipments to the US, and its territory is used for smuggling illegal migrants into the US.
