Wells Scholars have had a strong impact on the IU and Bloomington communities. They can be seen performing in operas, theatre productions, concerts, and recitals and competing in varsity and intramural sports and on the IU Speech, College Bowl, and Ethics Bowl teams. They have sought out leadership positions in student publications, student government, the Marching 100, and service and professional organizations. Since the beginning of the program, Scholars have volunteered at places such as Habitat for Humanity, the Red Cross, the Community Kitchen, Middle Way House, and the Boys and Girls Club. In 1997, Scholars founded WAVE, the Wells Activism and Volunteer Effort, to encourage even more service work by Scholars in the Bloomington community. Many Scholars have won campus-wide honors, such as the Wells and the Stahr Distinguished Senior awards, and prestigious awards for graduate study, such as the Rhodes, Truman, Marshall, Goldwater, Mitchell, Rotary, and Churchill scholarships, the Fulbright Grant, and the Ford and Mellon Fellowships.

As demonstrated by these examples, a Wells Submission can be a valuable tool for the defendant. It gives the prospective defendant the opportunity to speak to the decision maker and to have his or her position on the substance of the matter heard before a decision is made to commence proceedings. At the same time responding to a Wells Notice can ultimately harm a prospective defendant’s position at the hearing and in later negotiations. It is therefore extremely important for a prospective respondent or defendant to analyze the pros and cons with their attorney before making the submission.

During the fall of 1898, Wells entered Spence's Trunk Store in downtown Richmond to purchase a leather strap to bundle baseball bats. He inquired about the store's odd architecture. The store was the former Barton Opera House which failed as a "honky tonk" featuring disreputable entertainment. Upon leaving the store Wells commented there was money to be made with a "popular-priced Vaudeville." He quickly persuaded Spence to relinquish his lease, and reopened the building as the Bijou Family Theatre on January 9, 1899. Richmond's first Vaudeville house was an immediate success and Jake Wells made the transition from baseball to "Mr. Clean Entertainment."

Combining the Wells score with results of D-dimer testing (Table 3) increased diagnostic accuracy and the ability of the rule to exclude DVT. Two hundred twenty-two patients (17% of all patients) at lowest risk for DVT (score 0) had a normal result on D-dimer testing. Five of these 222 patients had DVT (prevalence, 2.3%). The sensitivity increased to 98.3%, but the specificity was halved. The negative predictive value ... increased to 97.8%, and the negative likelihood ratio decreased to 0.08. If a Wells score of 1 or less was used in combination with a normal result on D-dimer testing to categorize patients, 21% (instead of 17%) of the patients were categorized as being at very low risk.
