The Weather Channel is investing $50 Million to convert their on-screen graphics to HD and to build a new studio in Atlanta for HD. They will break ground on the new building on May 2nd and it should be completed by January. Interestingly, DirecTV will add the TWC in HD in September, but will upconvert everything until the new studio is complete -- there's another one of those 100 HD channels -- and eventually when all of their programming is HD, they will down-convert the HD feed for those who don't have HD by then. No word on cable carriage yet, but they say they are getting a "positive reaction" from the cable companies.

The Weather Channel is an enormously successful enterprise. It is by far the biggest independent basic cable channel left and virtually every big media company has tried to buy it at some point over the years. And its web site, like it or not, is one of the most successful properties on the web. This is a huge deal. Landmark will get very close to its $5 billion

On the distribution side of its HD initiative, The Weather Channel has reached agreements for carrying The Weather Channel HD with all six of the top programming distributors. These are: Charter Communications, Comcast Cable, Cox Communications, DirecTV, EchoStar Communications and its DISH Network, and Time Warner Cable. In addition, the network has signed HD agreements with many other cable companies. Launches have already been completed in many markets and others are planned for upcoming months.

As The Weather Channel's primary field reporter, Seidel is usually "first out the door" for coverage of extreme weather from hurricanes to snowstorms. Indeed, he has been the subject of several newspaper articles in the cities he has visited, all with the theme "If Seidel's in town, the weather is going to be terrible." That's true in most cases. However, Seidel does get some non-extreme assignments as well, covering NFL football weekly--including the Super Bowl, The PGA Tour, U.S. Open Tennis, NASCAR, the Indianapolis 500 and several other major events. His 14 to 18 hour days in the field generally include two reports each hour for TWC and often live reports for affiliates in major cities and network TV. He's appeared on ABC's "Good Morning America" and "World News Tonight," CNBC's "The News with Brian Williams," and CBS's "The Early Show."
