The War at Home: Afghanistan
built 202 days ago
The war in Iraq and Afghanistan does not just happen "over there." Here in Tucson, we have families learning to get along without their loved ones, veterans who come back changed by the experience and trying to fit back into their old lives and companies who are trying to get by minus employees deployed with the National Guard.
[M]ost speakers focused on the war. One former Navy intelligence officer from the Vietnam War era was concerned about veterans' care. Although he noted it was difficult for him to receive health care, he said he was primarily concerned about the young men and women now serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Vet Centers are a direct legacy of the Vietnam War, created when it became apparent that a significant number of servicemen and -women from that war were having readjustment problems. They provide counseling, outreach, medical referral and advocacy; these days their fastest-growing client group is veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.

[One] difference is the level of "political awareness" in the boardroom, according to Arment. In contrast to their commercial counterparts, defense contractors keep very close tabs on what goes on in Washington and react at a moment's notice to anything that threatens their revenue stream. For example, faced with the ongoing expense of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the need for reconstruction after Hurricane Katrina, Congress is talking about across-the-board cuts, even in defense spending. As a result, the Department of Defense has preemptively proposed cutting $32.1 billion in spending over the next five years.
