The Vikings have ... shown up from time to time in other Blizzard games. Olaf can be unlocked as a hidden character in the 1993 game Rock 'N' Roll Racing. They most recently appeared as Mobs in Blizzard's MMORPG World of Warcraft in the dungeon Uldaman. One of the quests in Uldaman also requires the player to collect the Shaft of Tsol and Amulet of Gni'Kiv, which spell out "Lost" and "Vik'ing" when read backwards. The shaft and amulet are combined to form the Staff of Prehistoria, which fits the theme of Uldaman and also is an area in The Lost Vikings.

The Lost Vikings is a side-scrolling platform puzzle game with a twist. Instead of one character who can jump, run, shoot, collect items, flip switches and so on, there are three different characters, each with his own skills. Eric the Swift can jump, run and bash through walls with his tough helmet. Olaf the Stout has a shield which can block attacks, function as an air glider or as a step to stand on. Baleog the Fierce can shoot things with his arrows (including switches) or kill things with his sword. Players will have to use the three Vikings as a team, if there is any hope to get past the increasingly difficult levels and puzzles.

The Lost Vikings is a challenging game, and it features 37 levels, so it takes a while to finish. Some traps are impossible to avoid until you've experienced them at least once, and you'll often find yourself in split-second situations where you need to organize the Vikings in a specific order that you can discover only through trial and error. This sort of challenge may seem tedious to some people, especially since you spend a great deal of time in the game just catching the characters up to one another. Blizzard at least made it easy to take breaks in the GBA version, as it includes a battery save that lets you continue from the level you left off on. Unfortunately, this ... eliminates one of the best side effects of the password system from the older Super NES and Genesis versions--the ability to replay previously completed levels.

In the game, the three Vikings get kidnapped by Tomator, an extraterrestrial emperor of the Croutonian empire, for an inter-galactic zoo and become lost in various periods of time. The purpose of the game is to control the three characters (who all have separate abilities) in order to solve puzzles to escape and get back home.
