Greenville's school system is the largest in the state andThe Upstate is home to over 215 international companies, such as Bowater Incorporated, Michelin North America's headquarters, General Electric, Hitachi, Bosch and BMW. Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson are cities that are poised for massive expansion in the 21st century economy. For example, the BMW plant currently employs over 4,500 workers. The plant is located on I85 between Greenville and Spartanburg. BMW recently expanded their production line by adding a third vehicle that is produced at the plant. And, there is talk of a second BMW plant in the region!

Each summer the Upstate Institute conducts the Upstate Field School by offering paid fellowships to Colgate University students who want to become engaged in the region through work with a community or governmental organization in Madison, Chenango or Oneida counties. Over the summer, Upstate Fellows work 35 hours a week for a partner organization and spend one afternoon a week on campus delving into regional issues and developing specific skills. In the past, student fellows have completed research projects, developed training programs, worked with clients, participated in program development and wrote grants. Student applications are due by Friday, February 22, 2008. Applications for community organizations are due by Friday, February 29, 2008.
The majority of business and commerce in the Upstate takes place in Greenville County. Greenville has the largest concentration of businesses and financial institutions in its downtown area. Many financial institutions have regional offices located in downtown Greenville. These include Wachovia and Bank of America. Other major industries of commerce in the Upstate include the auto industry which is concentrated mainly along the corridor between Greenville and Spartanburg around the BMW manufactuing facility in Greer. The other major industry in the Upstate is the healthcare and pharmaceuticals.

Incoming director Ellen Percy Kraly has an impressive track record of working with and within the upstate community. The geography professor's studies of urban development and the role of immigrants in Utica, for example, have spawned a lasting relationship with the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees. She has ... taught numerous courses with service learning components in Utica and the Adirondacks, as well as abroad in Uganda and Sudan. And as a 25-year resident of Hubbardsville who sent her children to Hamilton Central School, Kraly brings personal knowledge of the issues affecting the region, and a deep commitment to it. Kraly sat down with the Scene recently to discuss the institute and her vision for it.
