The Tragically Hip: Band
built 201 days ago
Dippy journalists aside, there's no mistaking that The Tragically Hip are the premier rock band of the Great White North. Look no further than the Hip's Zoë/Rounder debut album, "In Violet Light" (released June 11).
The members of The Tragically Hip have been together for nearly 20 years. The band has sold over six million albums in Canada alone and has won 11 Juno Awards. Their label, Universal Music Canada, is in early discussions regarding a 20th Anniversary Greatest Hits album.

Canadian rockers The Tragically Hip just keep on truckin', having recently added more North American dates to a tour that kicked off in January. The Tragically Hip is supporting its 11th studio album, World Container, which hit shelves in the US in March. The lead single, "In View," is streaming at the band's MySpace page , along with a few other songs from the set. World Container follows 2005's Hipeponymous, a 37-song, two-CD, two-DVD box set that includes a full-length concert DVD and a bonus DVD with 23 videos.
The Tragically Hip, one of Canada's most successful and influential rock bands, will be honoured by The Royal Conservatory of Music at its Royal Occasion gala. The band's members will be presented with the Conservatory's Honorary Fellowship at the event, which takes place at the Windsor Arms Hotel in Toronto on Wednesday, May 24.

Has the Tragically Hip finally lost its standing as Canada's top rock band? There's little doubt that Kingston, Ontario's favourite sons have been on a downward slide, popularity-wise, for the last few years. Back in '96, the group came close to selling out the Pacific Coliseum three nights in a row; last Sunday, it couldn't even pack GM Place for a single night--and this after the promoters offered discounted tickets to any of the 55,000 football fans who'd spent the afternoon across the way at B.C. Place. As far as album sales go, the quintet's last couple of releases haven't flown out of stores the way mid-'90s discs like Day for Night and Trouble at the Henhouse did. Hell, even the band's long-time manager, Jake Gold, is out of the picture now. Apparently he found his true calling as a judge of homogenized pop singers on the vacuous talent show Canadian Idol.
