The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was one movie lightly based on Ed Gein. The story is about a group of travelling teens who stumble on a horror house. The residents of the house are a family of weird homicidal cannibals who ... perform grave robberies, and construcs furniture made of bones, skulls and human skin. The lead bad guy is called Leatherface. Leatherface chases the teens around with his chainsaw, wearing a human face mask. There are about four Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is harder to differentiate. It is a remake in the purer sense, a film with the same basic characters and the same basic plot as Tobe Hooper’s infamous tale of five teens who find themselves face-to-face with a skin-wearing, chainsaw-carrying madman, the now-legendary Leatherface. With so much in common, the question becomes, how does it measure up?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the quintessential horror movie of all time, and along with "Night of the Living Dead" and "The Exorcist" helped establish the modern era of horror. Gunnar Hansen's performance as Leatherface would eventually serve as the prototype for many of the slashers of the late 70's and early 80's. Daniel Pearl's magical cinematography helped capture the tension of the moment and transfer the fear to the audience. The atmosphere was accented by a well-placed, spooky soundtrack co-composed by Tobe Hooper, echoing the screams of Sally's terror. This movie is definitely not for the weak, although by today's standards it's not as controversial as when it was original released in 1974.

What separates Texas Chainsaw Massacre from its predecessors is its anarchic, cynical hysteria—its bizarre and dark-as-hell gallows humor. Watching Night of the Living Dead today with the wrong audience can turn the one-time king of terror films into a monotonous and campy affair, thereby sabotaging the film's 11th-hour plunge into hell. But because Chainsaw is often as audaciously funny as it is distressing, no one dares laugh. In many cases, the juxtaposition of horror with comedy is so confrontational, it can have a stultifying, choking effect. When the first victim wanders into the lair of the infamous Leatherface and is beaten to death by a sledgehammer, Hooper mutes the man's screams and substitutes them with a frightened hog's squeals. That's just one of many examples of Hooper using the friction of stylistic dichotomies to create an atmosphere of perversion and dread.

Deep in the heart of Texas—a country of dead armadilloes, violated corpses and disused slaughterhouses—a group of vapid teenagers unwisely enter an old, dark house. The apparent leading man wanders down a filthy corridor towards a red room walled with animal trophies. Suddenly, without any Hitchcockian overhead shot to pre-empt the shattering shock, Leatherface, a squealing, obese killer, appears from nowhere and smashes his head with a sledgehammer. Before the audience has had time really to register what has happened, Leatherface slams an unexpected, grating steel shutter across the corridor and finishes off the still-twitching boy out of sight. After the film has been blooded by its first kill, Leatherface rapidly slaughters three more of the teenagers, using a meathook, the sledge, and a buzzing chainsaw. Fleeing from Leatherface, Sally, the heroine by virtue of her survival, is repeatedly caught in brambles and bushes that the killer easily saws his way through.

The plot of the film revolves primarily around a group of friends on a road trip in rural Texas. The purpose of the road trip is to visit the hometown of Sally and Franklin's father in order to check on their grandfather's grave after reports of grave robbing. After their van runs low on gas, the group of friends visits the childhood home of Sally and Franklin's father where they are attacked by a family of cannibalistic men, including the chainsaw-wielding Leatherface.
