   One of the lasting images from the Spice Girls is Geri's Union Jack outfit from the Brits - one of the items she sold for charity after she split from the band. There is no doubt the girls sound British when they talk and rap but are The Spice Girls a particularly British band? In a way not since their brand of pop has many US R&B influences. However it's their attitude, to the press, the public and the music industry, that really marks them as being more American than British. They knew what they wanted from the very start and have jolly well gone out and got it. Their success too was groundbreaking. Apart from Bananarama who are the exception that proves the rule, only a few British girl bands had been successful in Britain prior to Wannabe.

   To accompany their second album, Spice World, the group now stars in this clumsy, inept film. Predictably, the team behind this tale of "girl power" is all male: director Bob Spiers, writer Kim Fuller and three producers.

6. Spice Girls -- Geri Halliwell
   The Spice Girls are an English pop group, founded in 1994. Two years later after the band’s foundation, the Spice Girls, consisting of Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell released their debut single, “Wannabe”. It took the song only a couple of weeks to get the top of the UK Singles Chart. In the period of time from 1994 to 2000, the all-female band released the total of three studio albums and recorded ten singles, selling over 55 million records worldwide.
7. Spice Girls -- Group
   The first release in two years from The Spice Girls will be a double-A side single, Holler Holler and Let Love Lead The Way. The first song is an uptempo dance number while the other is a classic Spicy-ballad. The single was released in the UK on October 23rd and went straight to number one. This will be followed by the album Forever on November 6th. The four-piece group have been busy writing and recording for over 14 months in London, Miama and LA. Guest producers will include Rodney Jenkins, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
8. Spice Girls -- Virgin Records
   Selling only 33,803 copies of their third LP Forever in the U.S. during its first week in stores, the Spice Girls are, according to a U.K. paper, calling it quits. Sporty Spice, a.k.a. Melanie Chisholm, told Britain's Daily Record that the quartet's performance on the MTV Europe Music Awards Thursday evening may be their last.
9. Victoria Beckham -- Spice Girls
   Victoria Beckham may be famous primping and preening...the body-conscious Spice Girl showed off bizarre saggy skin on her leg, while her tiny thigh looked almost hollow around the bone. The star admits to keeping slim with a carefully watched menu of fish and vegetables, but friends recently said: "She doesn't exercise at all." Age, coupled with vigorous dieting and little exercise may finally have taken its toll on the star's body."

    Spice Girls were the first major British pop music phenomenon of the mid-'90s to not have a debt to independent pop/rock. Instead, the all-female quintet derived from the dance-pop tradition that made Take That the most popular British group of the early '90s, but there was one crucial difference. Spice Girls use dance-pop as a musical base, but they infused the music with a fiercely independent, feminist stance that was equal parts Madonna, post-riot grrrl alternative rock feminism, and a co-opting of the good-times-all-the-time stance of England's new lad culture. Their proud, all-girl image and catchy dance-pop appealed to younger listeners, while their colorful, sexy personalities and sense of humor appealed to older music fans, making Spice Girls a cross-generational success. The group ... became chart-toppers throughout Europe in 1996, before concentrating in America in early 1997. Every member of Spice Girls was given a specific identity by the British press from the outset, and each label was as much an extension of their own personality as it was a marketing tool, since each name derived from their debut single and video, "Wannabe."
