The Simpsons: Series

One unique honor came on January 14th, 2000, when "The Simpsons" received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This was part of FOX's "Simpsons Global Fanfest," a yearlong celebration of all things Simpson. Several lines of Simpsons action figures by Playmates Toys hit store shelves, a few Simpsons video games such as "The Simpsons Road Rage" and "The Simpsons: Hit & Run" were released, and many Simpsons episode collections were released on DVD (the Season One DVD is the second best selling series set of all time, behind the first season of "Chappelle's Show").

The Simpsons ... took over first place from the series, "The Flintstones" in 1997 as the longest running animated TV show in prime time! In 2004, it became the longest running comedy series in primetime, animated or otherwise. "Saturday Night Live" is still the longest running comedy series in any time slot though.

In the first season of Ullman's variety show, a more crudely drawn version of the Simpsons appeared as bumper segments alongside a quickly forgotten animated short which was left in the proverbial dust after The Simpsons began to gain popularity. In the beginning, these shorts were written entirely by Groening with the aid of several animators from Klasky-Csupo. The shorts would continue to be broadcast until the end of the third season when FOX allowed Groening and Brooks to develop the shorts into a full series.

The buzz surrounding "The Simpsons Movie" has been huge, considering that it's an 18-year-old show that can't even beat "Two and a Half Men" in the Nielsen ratings. And for those who continue to defend the show - and even those who don't - there's good reason to believe that optimism might be rewarded. Many of the creative forces behind the programs mentioned above have combined forces on "The Simpsons Movie" screenwriting team. The most prolific director in the series' history, David Silverman, is at the helm. Everything about the process of making this film indicates that the producers took the time to do it right.

The Simpsons started in 1987, as a set of animated interstitial clips — that is, as dividers between individual sketches — on The Tracey Ullman Show. They proved more popular than the live-action portions of the show, and in 1989, were spun off into a series of their own — one that has long outlasted the show where it was born.
