The Ramones: Johnny Ramone
built 646 days ago
The Ramones' big inspiration was The New York Dolls. The Dolls' lead guitarist, Johnny Thunders, was from Queens and his greatest song was called "Subway Train". And you thought Punk Rock just HAPPENED!?!

The Ramones' sound was simple and direct, combining Joey Ramone's wonderfully limited vocal range with Johnny Ramone's buzz-saw guitar and Dee and Tommy's amphetamine rhythm section to create a visceral and aggressive, no-holds-barred musical statement. It was a re-creation of an earlier rock-and-roll style, speeded up and played as loudly as it could be played.

Los Angeles, CA (September 15, 2004) -- Johnny Ramone, co-founder and lead guitarist of seminal 70’s punk rock band The Ramones, died in his sleep this afternoon at 3:03 pm in his home in Los Angeles. Ramone had been fighting an ongoing five year battle with prostate cancer.

The Ramones were quite simply THE classic punk rock band. The brothers Ramone - Dee Dee, Joey, Tommy and Johnny armed with only a rudimentary musical knowledge provided a generation with beautifully simplistic, machine gun bursts of classic punk rock. Minimalist & raucous but each song was so goddamned catchy!

From 76 to 78, the Ramones were a skyrocket, releasing four more or less flawless albums. Then they turned into a Ford Econoline, touring the world and releasing 10 more studio albums. Many were worthy, though only 1985s Too Tough to Die is as good as most of the 21 70s tracks omitted from this, their fourth or sixth anthology, depending on how you count. Its their first box, selected by their late guitarist-leader Johnny Ramone, who was prouder than necessary of both their longevity and his ability to retire at 45 off his catalogue and investments. The 70s albums end on disc one, and the fourth disc is devoted to a recycled video comp that further emphasizes their careerist period. All 21 omitted songs would have fit on that disc.

The following year the Ramones were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Dee Dee was found dead of a drugs overdose in June 2002 and guitarist Johnny Ramone succumbed to prostate cancer two years later, leaving drummer Tommy the sole surviving original member. Whatever record sales they achieved, the Ramones' contribution to popular music is considerable; history will show whether such fame was influential.
