President Thomas Jefferson commissioned two explorers, William Dunbar and George Hunter, to explore and document the southern portion of the Purchase lands. Much of their journey through Arkansas was along the Ouachita River. Their northern counterparts were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

Three documents relating to the financial aspects of the Purchase are currently on loan to the Historic New Orleans Collection. The documents include Thomas Jefferson's warrant to the Secretary of Treasury to issue stock certificates. The exhibition, "Fusion of Nations," is open through May 20, 2003.

Thomas knew that D.C. law allows tenants of an apartment house to match any purchase offer -- an unusual way to keep tenants from being displaced and to allow them to benefit when housing values climb.
