The Princess Diaries

[T]here's an easy-going charm to The Princess Diaries, making it far less of an ordeal than one might suspect. Screenwriter Gina Wendkos peppers the story with a few surprisingly humorous sequences, while the supporting cast - which includes Heather Matarazzo and Caroline Goodall - tries their best with the material (Mandy Moore seems right at home in the cheese, though).
In "The PD2 Makeover", Anne Hathaway's stand-in Anna Curtis gets made-up and over. Disney has put together a nice DVD for The Princess Diaries 2, but the film is a lot less appealing than the original Princess Diaries. While it was a modest success at the box office, it's not a very rewatchable sequel and is only saved by generous amounts of charisma from the returning cast and director. Still, only completists and the most passionate of fans of the original film and its characters will probably wish to add this to their Disney DVD collections.
If this all sounds familiar, it is. In lesser hands, The Princess Diaries would never be more than an after-school special. However, veteran director Marshall knows how to exploit the laughs in even the most familiar material.
In the second film, Mia is addressed as "HRH Princess Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia" while IN the country; this is incorrect. She would really be addressed as HRH Princess Amelia of Genovia, while representing the country at a royal function and then as HRH Princess Amelia while in her home country.

``The Princess Diaries'' fetched an encouraging $712,000 Down Under, positioned to capitalize on the school vacation that begins in two states this weekend. Disney's picture has taken a fair $425,000 in Taiwan.

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is a color-by-numbers sequel -- safe enough that there are no outrageous gaffes, bland enough that it's forgotten five minutes after leaving the theater. Any further probing into its strengths (few) and weaknesses (many) is almost irrelevant.
