The first Princess Diaries had the benefit of acting as wish fulfillment for every girl who's ever dreamed of being a princess. Princess Diaries 2 is about what a drag it would all be. All eyes on you, parliament messing with your personal life, fighting off pretenders to the throne, all that waving and smiling and faking interest in the common folk. Oh sure, you get a closet full of clothes and jewels, but is it worth it? Mia's motivation to enter into an arranged marriage is explained as a patriotic, familial loyalty, but she's fighting against villains whose villainy is an apparently legitimate desire for the throne. She's not exactly defending the free world.

Princess Diaries 2 is best when it sticks close to the original, namely, in finding inventive new ways for poor Princess Mia to humiliate herself in public, every slip caught by Genovia's tireless gossip reporter. Meanwhile, director Garry Marshall, a master at garnishing his movies with colorful supporting characters, overdoes it this time around. He simply isn't satisfied until every member of the royal entourage has been assigned his own unusual quirk, but with so many distractions, it's much too easy to get lost in the scenery. The costumes are so fine that handsome Lord Devereaux (Chris Pine) is upstaged by his own wardrobe whenever he saunters onscreen. And when Mia should be the center of attention, she quickly disappears amidst the three-ring circus around her. Who really wants to see such dullards end up together anyway?

A couple of days later, San Francisco learns that Mia is the Genovian heir after Paolo tells the media so everybody will know that he is the one that made Princess Mia look like a princess. Although unimpressed, Clarisse opts to ignore the situation and prepares for the State Dinner, which Mia attends, though managing to somewhat humiliate herself in the process. The day after the State Dinner, Mia agrees to appear on Lilly's public access television program Shut Up and Listen and to watch Michael's band perform at a venue that Saturday night. However, Josh asks Mia to go with him to the Baker Beach Bash, the school's annual beach party, and she excitedly agrees. She remembers to tell Michael that she will watch see his band the following Saturday night, but forgets to tell Lilly of the change. The beach party goes well at first, but spirals out of control when the media learn of Mia's presence.
